All-Day Performance Classes & Band Rehearsals

Everyone began the morning in their class rehearsal groups – Monsters of Rock and Extreme Rock. During the late-morning session the Monsters of Rock stars reassembled their bands in the practice rooms and rehearsed with Richard (Bass) and Tim (Guitar) for their medley showcase.

After lunch the bands took turns to rehearse on stage and have a sound check. During the late afternoon session everyone readied themselves for a complete run through of their sets in order of appearance for the showcase performance later.

Throughout the day all students were prepped with hints and tips about performance skills and on-stage etiquette. This included:

• Stage Left / Stage Right
• Getting on and off the stage
• Microphone technique
• Mic-ing up amps for live sound
• Stage management
• On-stage safety
• Live sound and lighting

…and finally.

• Classic rock moves and poses! (video coming soon!)

Morning Session – Group Performance Class

During this mornings performance session the Monsters of Rock class worked hard on their group set for the showcase performance tomorrow (Friday 30th July @ 4.30pm – MAPA Building, City of Bath College). The class rehearsed Velvet Revolver’s ‘Slither’ and Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Hey Joe’ with drummer Harry and singer Patrick.

Afternoon Session – Band Performance Class

After lunch the Monsters of Rock class gathered into their bands and rehearsed their medley sets in the practice rooms with the tutors stepping in as session musicians.

Extreme Rock Performance

The Extreme Rock class will be performing:

1. Crazy Train – Ozzy Osbourne
2. Why – Joe Satriani
3. Tequila – Wes Montgomery

Today the guys ditched their picks and learnt ‘Tequila’ Wes Montgomery style, whilst learning some tasty chords along the way. We had a blast at ” Mables Fatal Fable ” by Jason Becker for fun and a good technique workout, and finally focussed on polishing up the songs ready for tomorrows showcase performance.

DRUMS

Today we covered:

- Snare drum technique, with varied accents in single sixteenth notes.

- RLRL RLRL RLRL RLRL/ LRLR LRLR LRLR LRLR stick patterns.

This was an interesting challenge for the students, as it taught them how to play leading from both their right hands and then left. These exercises are great for building your chops and technique. Again we applied this to the drum kit moving the exercises around the toms and cymbals.

Morning Session – Technique Expander

During the morning session the Monsters of Rock class learnt how to play licks that would work over the chords that they learnt on Day #2. This included:

The class working hard on their licks

1. Minor pentatonic licks
2. Dominant pentatonic licks
3. Lydian pentatonic licks
4. Diminished licks

The class then learnt how to play Jimi Hendrix version of ‘Hey Joe’ and continued working on the performance of Velvet Revolver’s ‘Slither’. The class also submitted their band names:

3. Velvet Rose

The class bands have now chosen their set lists and now have the task of choosing an image and designing a band logo.

Afternoon Session – Performance Class

During the afternoon session the class gathered into their bands and rehearsed their songs for the performance on Friday. In the final session of the day the class tried out some of the many rock hair styles.

Morning Session – Technique Expander

During the morning session the Monsters of Rock class learnt some new chord shapes. These included:

Lawrence & Frank

1. Major / Minor
2. Power chords
3. Dominant 7
4. Altered Dominant 7
5. Major 7 #11
6. Diminished

This exercise was then expanded into an A Dominant Blues Jam where the class learnt a descending turnaround and used their minor pentatonic licks and expressive techniques from Day #1. The group then rehearsed Velvet Revolver’s ‘Slither’ with vocalist Patrick.

Afternoon Session – Performance Class

Over lunch the class had formed bands – drums, guitars & vocals. They chose band names and will be working on their image and band logo over the next few days. Each band will be performing a medley of classic rock riffs and a full band cover version of a classic rock hit! Some students also began writing their own songs for the performance.

In the final session of the day the Monsters of Rock class had a chance to learn some classic rock moves and poses!

- Salsa and Bossa Nova rhythms using stripped down Jazz chords and progressions ( 2-5-1 / 3-6-2-5-1 )

- Chord theory ( learning how to work out chord intervals and shapes from the chord name )

DRUMS

Today the drumming went a stage forward.

We looked at:

Llyod Howell

- sixteenths note hand patterns, with ghost notes

- samba and funk bass drum patterns

- basic 3 against 4 polyrhythmic ideas

- 4 way coordination

We brought all of these elements into the platform from day one, and moved them around the drum kit.  This encouraged the students to think of beats in new creative ways! which worked well. Well done to the drummers! and Bring on Day 3! – Tom

GUITAR

Morning Session – Technique Expander

During the morning session the Monsters of Rock class learnt positions 1 and 4 of the minor pentatonic scale and improvised over a static A minor rock groove. The class then worked through some of the various expressive techniques used in solos, including:

1. Bends
2. Slides
3. Vibrato
4. Hammers ons
5. Pull offs
6. Trills
7. Pinched harmonics

After the break the class discussed possible songs to perform for the performance on Friday (30th July @ City of Bath College MAPA Building). The class chose to begin working on Velvet Underground’s (Slash) classic track ‘Slither’

Afternoon Session – Performance Class

In the afternoon session the Monsters of Rock class finished learning ‘Slither’ and, after working out the structure of the song, began rehearsing the song for the rest of the afternoon.

Extreme Rock

Today in class students learnt how to harmonise the Major scale and sweep pick the arpeggios, as one an exercise for technique but also to familiarise them with each chords tonal quality. There was a picking technique polish up with students learning licks in the styles of Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen and John Petrucci. To test out their modal knowledge we had several jams where the students had to change key whilst staying in the same position of the neck. We also ploughed through Ozzy Osbournes “Crazy Train”. – Tim

DRUMS

We started today by learning how to incorporate independence and technique into basic rock beats.  As the morning developed i was giving the students different variations on single stroke sixteenth notes, and showing them how to move them round the drum kit.

With this the students are learning how to utilise their creative ideas using a simple concept. The idea is for them to learn how the practice in a productive way bringing the technique, beats and independence and making it into one exercise.

Harry, Joe, and Lloyd are taking to its well, and I look forward to Day 2 for more Rock drums. – Tom

The Live music scene has exploded in the UK over recent years, and the thirst for quality live music is greater than ever. International Guitar Foundation (IGF) is proud to be at the forefront of this musical revolution presenting a series of performance based rock camps for young aspiring and accomplished musicians to learn, create and perform.

South West Rocks is a five-day rock camp jam packed with workshops and activities to challenge and inspire the stars of tomorrow. Set in the scenic back of Bath, students will have the opportunity to improve their technique and musicianship with other players, at the same time as learning about the music industry and session scene from a host of professionals. Students will also have the chance to take part in a range of live performances during the five days including jam sessions, band rehearsals and the student showcase on the final day.

This mixture of performance and education offers a unique benchmark opportunity for budding musicians to maximize their talents, network and socialise with new friends and become the next U2 or Foo Fighters!
